Who was Sister Judy?

Sr. Judy was the beloved principal of St. Lawrence Martyr School for 18 years, from 1986 to 2004. Her ministry in elementary education gave her energy. She valued the wisdom in the simplicity and honesty with which children approach life. Quoting a kindergarten student, she said, "I am happier here, than I have ever been in my whole life!"
Sister Judy cherished and nurtured many lifelong relationships and was happiest when she was able to be part of a good time. Be it playing cards, golfing, cheering on her favorite NFL or college football team (ND), sight-seeing or lovingly preparing a meal. "Life was good."

Benefiting from her happy, fun-loving, and hospitable spirit, the school honors Sister Judy. Her commitment to providing the best possible Catholic education while having fun at the same time can be further realized through the creation of the Sister Judith Peters Learning Commons where all students can come to learn and share in the experiences of a loving God.

What is a learning Commons?

A learning commons is a flexible workspace that invites students to access knowledge through active learning by way of communication, collaboration and technology.

The Sister Judy Peter’s Learning Commons will include the following:

  • interactive collaborative workstations with whiteboard tables

  • independent study cubicles with iMac computers

  • reading and research spaces

  • a resource center

  • The Betty O’C. & Edward P. Greene Library

  • wireless connectivity

The space will be a hub of activity from early morning through late afternoon setting students up for future success by the attainment of life-long skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, project creation and enterprising activities, including STEM engagement. Additionally, the space will include a private resource center that will provide support to students with unique learning challenges.

Please note, materials are subject to change.
